Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started with PAI
The Physiopedia AI Assistant is an artificial intelligence-powered rehabilitation assistant developed by Physiopedia. Unlike general AI tools like ChatGPT, PAI is specifically designed to meet the needs of rehabilitation professionals. It is trained exclusively on Physiopedia's internationally respected content database, which is continually refined and updated with the most recent evidence and information.
You can ask PAI any question that you would ask a professional mentor or colleague and it will provide an answer based on its deep understanding of Physiopedia resources. Every response is accompanied by the sources on which it is based, making it easy to verify information and dive deeper into topics.
PAI is designed for physical therapists, physical therapists and other rehabilitation professionals worldwide. Whether you're a student, a new graduate, an experienced clinician, a clinical educator, or in healthcare leadership, PAI provides tailored support for your professional needs.
PAI is available through:
- Web platform: Access PAI through your web browser at pai.physio-pedia.com
- Mobile apps: Download the PAI app for iOS (App Store) or Android (Google Play) to have PAI at your fingertips in the clinic
Using PAI
Simply type or speak your rehabilitation-related question and PAI will provide an answer using information from Physiopedia's evidence-based content. The more details you provide, the better the answers will be.
PAI maintains conversation context, so you can ask follow-up questions naturally. If you want to start fresh on a new topic, simply click "New Chat" to begin a new conversation.
You can ask PAI about anything related to your physiotherapy learning and professional development, such as:
- Clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis
- Evidence-based treatment approaches
- Exercise principles and descriptions
- Assessment tools and outcome measures
- Understanding clinical presentations and pathologies
- Professional writing and communication
- Communication strategies
- Professional development topics
- Research methodology
- Leadership and management support
PAI Tasks are guided learning experiences that support you in developing skills across key physiotherapy professional activities:
- Clinical Documentation (SOAP Note): Develop comprehensive clinical notes from your conversations
- Differential Diagnosis: Deepen your understanding of clinical reasoning and condition differentiation
- Red Flag Check: Build your knowledge of serious pathologies and when to escalate care
- Referral Letter: Learn to write clear, professional referral correspondence
- Discharge Report: Develop your ability to write comprehensive, well-structured discharge summaries
- Patient Education Guide: Practise writing clear, accessible education materials for patients
- Plan of Care: Develop your understanding of treatment planning, goals and interventions
- SMART goal setting: Learn to set personalised specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals
To use a task, simply click the "Tasks" button in your PAI conversation and select the task you need.
If PAI doesn't answer your question effectively, consider the following:
- Ensure your question relates to physiotherapy knowledge or education: PAI answers questions based on content from the Physiopedia site and so cannot not assist with unrelated topics
- Add more detail: Provide additional context in a follow-up question to help PAI better understand what you need
- Be more specific: A focused question often yields better results than a very broad one
- Start a new chat: If you've changed topics mid-conversation, click "New Chat" to give PAI a fresh context
- Avoid inappropriate requests: PAI is designed to support your learning, not to complete assessments or assignments that should demonstrate your own understanding
PAI is trained exclusively on Physiopedia's peer-reviewed, evidence-based content. Every answer includes:
- Source citations: References to the specific Physiopedia articles used
- Clickable links: Direct access to the full source material for verification
- Transparent reasoning: Clear explanations of the thinking behind responses
However, like all AI assistants, PAI can make mistakes. We recommend:
- Always double-checking important information
- Using your professional judgment in combination with PAI's suggestions
- Consulting original sources when making important decisions
- Treating PAI as an educational partner, not a replacement for your expertise
PAI is an educational tool, not a clinical decision support system, so there is no need to include patient details in your questions. We recommend keeping your questions general and learning-focused:
- Keep questions general: Ask about conditions, presentations, and principles rather than specific patient scenarios
- Focus on learning outcomes: Frame your question around what you want to understand, not a specific case
- Never include identifying information: Do not share names, dates of birth, or any other personal identifiers
- Follow your local regulations: Always comply with GDPR, HIPAA, or your local data protection requirements
PAI prioritises data privacy and security. Your conversations are private and there is no corporate surveillance or data mining of your interactions.
Features and Functionality
History: All your PAI conversations are automatically saved in your History, allowing you to:
- Review previous discussions
- Continue conversations started on any device
Search: Use the search function to quickly find specific conversations or topics across all your PAI interactions. Simply enter keywords related to what you're looking for.
You can delete a selected conversation by hovering over the conversation and clicking on the three dots that appear to reveal a submenu with print and delete options.
The Print feature allows you to create hard copies or PDFs of a selected PAI conversation. Simply hover over the conversation you wish to print in the chat history and click the three dots that appear to reveal a submenu with print and delete options.
You can easily copy any of PAI's responses by:
- Clicking the Copy icon next to the response
- Or selecting the text and using your device's standard copy function (Ctrl+C or Command+C)
This is useful for incorporating PAI's suggestions into your learning logs or sharing information with colleagues.
PAI includes a feedback feature that allows you to rate responses and provide comments. Your feedback helps improve PAI's performance and ensures it continues to meet the needs of rehabilitation professionals. You can provide feedback by clicking the thumbs up or thumbs down icon on any response. You can provide a optional feedback when you click on the thumbs down option to let us know the nature of any problem.
Comparing PAI to Other Tools
While Google search is excellent for finding information, PAI offers distinct advantages for rehabilitation professionals:
- Pre-filtered quality content: Every answer comes from Physiopedia's peer-reviewed, evidence-based articles
- Conversational reasoning: PAI understands context and can engage in back-and-forth clinical reasoning discussions
- Instant synthesis: Rather than sorting through multiple search results, PAI provides synthesised answers with sources
- Clinical focus: PAI understands physiotherapy-specific terminology and educational contexts
- Professional writing support: PAI can help you develop documentation, education materials and professional reports, not just find information
- Always referenced: Every answer includes citations to allow verification
Generic AI tools like ChatGPT draw from unreliable internet sources and lack the physiotherapy-specific knowledge essential for professional learning and development:
- Evidence-based foundation: PAI is trained exclusively on Physiopedia's curated, peer-reviewed content rather than unverified internet sources
- Physiotherapy expertise: PAI understands physiotherapy-specific terminology, professional knowledge and educational contexts that general AI tools miss
- Source transparency: Every PAI answer includes citations to specific Physiopedia articles with clear reasoning.
- Professional learning tasks: PAI includes guided learning tasks covering SOAP notes, condition presentations and professional writing, designed specifically for physiotherapy education
- Data privacy: Built by physiotherapy professionals who understand healthcare privacy requirements, with no corporate data mining or surveillance
- Professional development: PAI is designed to develop your physiotherapy knowledge and support professional growth, not just provide quick answers
The core PAI technology and its learning capabilities are the same whether you access it through the standalone PAI website or through Physiopedia Plus. However, there are important differences in how you access and use PAI.
Access and Pricing:
- PAI Standalone: You're subscribing specifically for PAI access at a streamlined price point
- Physiopedia Plus: PAI is included as part of a comprehensive professional development platform that also includes internationally accredited CPD courses, resources and learning tools
Platform Experience:
- PAI Standalone: A focused, streamlined platform and apps designed specifically for AI assistant interactions
- Physiopedia Plus: PAI is integrated throughout a broader learning platform, accessible via an "Ask PAI?" button on every page alongside courses and resources
Account System:
- Separate accounts: The two platforms use separate user accounts, so your conversations are not shared between them
- Separate subscriptions: If you want to use PAI in both contexts, you would need two separate subscriptions
Which should you choose?:
- Choose PAI Standalone if you primarily want a dedicated AI learning companion with access to all PAI learning tasks
- Choose Physiopedia Plus if you want PAI plus access to comprehensive CPD courses, accredited learning and professional development resources
- Most users will find that one subscription meets their needs - there's typically no reason to subscribe to both platforms
